The Sugar Industry Biotech Council provides science-based information regarding biotechnology and other technological advances in sugar beet and sugar cane crops. This image shows a sugar beet field.

Why Biotechnology?

For centuries, agricultural crops used for food and feed have been improved through the selection and controlled pollination of plants, today known as selective breeding or hybridization.

Plant biotechnology simply is an extension of traditional plant breeding. More precise transfer of genetic information to develop crops with specific beneficial traits, such as new options for weed control, insect protection, higher yield and improved health benefits for consumers, helps growers meet consumer demand for healthy, great-tasting foods.

Efficient crop improvements like those available through biotechnology assure an abundant, healthy food supply while lessening impacts of modern agriculture on the environment.

That is the case with Roundup Ready® sugar beets. Growers now are able to control weeds in a more environmentally sustainable way, while producing the same pure and natural sugar that is identical at the molecular level to sugar improved through conventional methods. Biotechnology provides a platform for new technologies to manage the challenges farmers face and develop traits, such as new options for weed control, insect protection and disease resistance.

Always read and follow pesticide label directions. Roundup Ready crops contain genes that confer tolerance to glyphosate, the active ingredient in Roundup agricultural herbicides. Roundup agricultural herbicides will kill crops that are not tolerant to glyphosate. Roundup Ready Sugarbeets and any product of a Roundup Ready Sugarbeets seed or crop can only be exported to, or used, processed or sold in countries where all necessary regulatory approvals have been granted. It is a violation of national and international law to move material containing biotech traits across boundaries into nations where import is not permitted.
